Understanding Human Over-reliance on Technology

چکیده
An older adult was admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of new-onset seizures. Admission orders included initiation of the anticonvulsant phenytoin (handwritten using the brand name Dilantin), 300 mg orally every evening. Before the pharmacy closed, a pharmacy staff member who was new to the clinical area entered the Dilantin order into the pharmacy computer system, so that the medication could be obtained from an automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) in the patient care unit overnight. In the pharmacy’s computer system, medication selection for order entry was performed by typing the first 3 letters of the medication name (“dil” in this case) and then choosing the desired medication name from a drop-down list. The computer list contained both generic and brand names. The staff member was interrupted while performing the order entry. When this task was resumed, diltiazem 300 mg was selected instead of Dilantin 300 mg.

Trust in computer technology and the implications for design and evaluation
Computer technology is pervasive and often problematic, and the sociological construct of trust has emerged as an important intervening variable to describe reliance on technology. Trust is an important mechanism for coping with the cognitive complexity that accompanies increasingly sophisticated technology. Because of this, understanding trust can help explain reliance on technology and human ...
متن کاملUnderstanding reliance on automation: effects of error type, error distribution, age and experience.
An obstacle detection task supported by "imperfect" automation was used with the goal of understanding the effects of automation error types and age on automation reliance. Sixty younger and sixty older adults interacted with a multi-task simulation of an agricultural vehicle (i.e. a virtual harvesting combine). The simulator included an obstacle detection task and a fully manual tracking task....
متن کاملTrust in Automation: Designing for Appropriate Reliance
Automation is often problematic because people fail to rely upon it appropriately. Because people respond to technology socially, trust influences reliance on automation. In particular, trust guides reliance when complexity and unanticipated situations make a complete understanding of the automation impractical. This review considers trust from the organizational, sociological, interpersonal, p...

متن کاملHuman-Human Reliance in the Context of Automation
OBJECTIVE The current study examined human-human reliance during a computer-based scenario where participants interacted with a human aid and an automated tool simultaneously. BACKGROUND Reliance on others is complex, and few studies have examined human-human reliance in the context of automation. Past research found that humans are biased in their perceived utility of automated tools such th...
